RosieQueen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. The second child of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most well-known for her social politics, acting skills and ability to rhyme. When she was eight years old her Muslim cousin named her Latifah which means "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah started singing in the choir at Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and had her first public performance when she performed a rendition of "Home" as one of two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah's mother was a catalyst as she was always in contact with the school and with the music. Mark James, a local disc jockey, also known as D.J., was invited to the celebration. Mark the 45 King, to invite her to perform at school dance.
